‘Heat in the Hills’ chili cook-off to benefit Empty Bowls

2015-08-17

Chili cooks from left are Morgantown radio personality Jim Stallings and Heat in The Hills Organizer Rob Wolfe.

The inaugural “Heat in the Hills” Chili Cook-Off will be held on Saturday, August 22 at Camp Muffly near Morgantown.

Cash prizes of more than $2,000 will be awarded to the winners in four categories: Red Chili, Green Chili, Salsa and People’s Choice.

First time entrants as well as veteran cooks from across West Virginia and surrounding states are encouraged to register and participate. The cook-off is a sanctioned International Chili Society (ICS) event and the winner will be a step closer to the 2015 ICS world championship.

If 20 or more cooks participate, the winner will automatically be eligible to compete at the world competition. If there are fewer than 20 cooks, the winner will compete in a regional event leading to the world competition.

The public is urged to attend the event, sample the chili and vote for their favorite. The event will also feature live music, local craft vendors, refreshments and supervised activities for children.

Tickets will be available at the gate. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $8 for children aged 6-18. Children 5 and under will be admitted free. Gate opens to the public at 11 am.

Proceeds from the event will benefit a fund created by Empty Bowls Monongalia (EBM) and managed by Your Community Foundation (YCF). Funds raised by EBM stay in Monongalia County and are awarded to local food pantries, meal programs and weekend backpack food programs. Currently, EBM is supporting 21 different programs in Monongalia County.
